Esmee Hawkey has started her 2019 season out in fine form at Silverstone’s National Circuit yesterday, March 18, finishing first in class and fourth overall as part of the Media Day Speed Trials.
Andrew and Kerry had a fantastic day watching Esmee and the team prepare for the time trial sessions, testing the vehicle and track before Esmee had settled into the driver’s seat.
“We are one of Esmee’s sponsors and so were invited to watch the Porsche Speed Trials. The highlight was definitely being able to experience the track in a Porsche which was really fun,” Kerry said.
Esmee had settled into the driver’s seat nicely when the third session came around, where she completed 42 laps and achieved a lap time of 55.990 on the 1.6404-mile track, landing her first in class and fourth overall among 15 drivers.
Performances like this are particularly potent amid heated debate around females in motor racing, and adds to the evidence that females can compete shoulder-to-shoulder with men, given the opportunity.
Esmee has been voicing this belief more recently, having been chosen to participate in the unprecedented W Series, a female-only motor racing initiative designed to increase the number of female drivers in F1.
The Series is set to commence in May 2019, however, has brought with it debate over whether women can or should compete against men, and whether the female-only competition is the right way forward in encouraging equal participation.
